When drilling a ball you want to know your pin like how long is your pin. with a pin placement you wanna place the pin where the ball with give you the best feel, but you wanna check out the specs of the ball,

for example i buy a Lane 1 cobalt  bomb pearl, with a 1.5 inch pin, i drilled the pin in between the finger because i know that gives me the most control but buy putting the pin there it took alot of hook off the ball and gave it backend, i bought another coblat and drilled it under my ring finger and that gave me alot more hook over all.

So when you drill a ball try to drill it so you get a good feel on the ball, for you beginers out there.

Finding out if the lanes are oily or dry is easy. First thing you should do is play the line you always do, or throw the ball in the same area that you usually. If the ball doesn’t hit the pocket that means the lanes are oily. If your ball hits the pocket high, or goes on the other side of the head pin, the lanes are dry.

Well, when you have a finger tip ball you always wanna put your ring and middle finger in the ball first, then you put your thumb in the ball.

Trying to master hooking the ball is hard under normal conditions, but when the lanes are dry it’s a hole new story. When throwing the ball fast and hard with a high rev rate, or if you hook the ball it takes a lot accuracy.

Step one: When throwing a fast hook ball watch for any oil spots or dry areas on the lane, the thing is when the lanes are dry, finding a oily spot could save your life. When the lanes are a tad touchy in the back end, finding a dry spot will increase back end reaction.

Step two: When bowling, know your limitations.

Carry is where when your ball hits the pocket, or 1-3 or 1-2 depending on what hand you use, and getting a strike. So carry is the % of strikes you get when you hit the pocket.

How can you tell when you have bad carry?
When your bowling and you hit the pocket you leave a weak 10 pin, 7 pin, 5 pin, 4pin, or the 8-10 split. Another thing is when you keep leaving solid or stone pins. What a stone or solid pin is when your ball hits the pocket hard and you leave a pin standing that hasn’t been touched.

How can you get better carry?
There are a few ways to help you carry strikes better. When you start leaving weak pins, slow your ball speed down, rev your ball up, change rotations, change weights or change balls. When you change rotations you should know what release works better. If your release is 11-5 o-clock change it to 10-4 or 9-3 o-clock, this way your ball will drive harder.

Knowing the lanes you bowl on is key to bowling well.

Every bowling lane is 60ft long and is 40 boards wide. There are arrows about 15ft down the lane, the arrows are 5 boards apart, 5 from the gutter and 5 from the other arrows. The next thing is that the pocket on both sides of the lane is at the 17.5 board. The Boards are added on each side 0-20 and they meet at the head pin with is the 20th board.

OK, now if you’re league bowling and you don’t bowl on any PBA oil patterns, you should know that on any league shot, that the outside part of the lane is dry and the middle is oily. When you’re bowling you should always find out where the dryer part of the lane is.

Now on to the different types of lanes.
Now there are a few different types on lanes out there. There are wood, synthetic, wood synthetic, and guardian.
Wood lanes tend to have higher friction and faster hooking conditions. synthetic lanes will have a smother reaction, but synthetic lanes will also make it much easier to hook the ball. Synthetic lanes are easy to bowl on than wood lanes. Now wood synthetic (WS) lanes can be hard to bowl on. WS is two different lanes put together. The lanes could be the first 30ft could be wood or the other way around, by doing this the lanes make up many different reactions.

Knowing Your Rev rate.

If you have a low rev rate you will have less power but your ball will read the lane better. When the lanes become dry low rev rate makes it easy to bowl because your ball wont read the front part of the lane as early. A lower rev rate also will help you bowl more games.

If you have a high rev rate you will have a power full strike ball. With a high rev rate your ball will read the lane faster, but when the lanes are oily the ball will still read the lanes early but the result will be a strong back end reaction. When the lanes become dry you better hope you got a less aggressive bowling ball with you, if you don’t your going to have to start throwing the ball harder.

Here are some techniques for high and low rev rates.

IF you have a lower rev rate go out and get a high reactive bowling ball and drill the ball then go long with a strong back end. That means if you throw your ball straight you will love the pin carry you will have, but if you have a low rev rate and you like to hook it then it will have a stronger back end. When the lanes become dry just keep moving left if your a righty.

IF you have a high rev rate go out a get a heavy rolling ball, what a heavy rolling ball if a lower reactive ball the will drive through the pins. When the lanes are oily go straighter, but when the lanes get really dry then you might have some problem. When the lanes are dry and your standing as far as you can to the left, you should put LOFT on your ball. Loft is where you throw the ball farther down the lane, what loft does to your ball is it makes it go longer. When the ball is in the air it can’t hook and it can’t read the lane too early. If you still get too much hook and you can’t throw your ball any harder you have to go to the last thing to do. What you have to do is stand on negative 5 board or so in that area. Then when your standing in that area your foot should be almost sliding into the lane dividers. Then you will have to loft your ball over the gutter.

Bowling ball weights, the weight of your ball does matter. The max weight is 16lbs and the min is 6lbs. With a 16 pound ball you wont get as much hook as you would get with a 14lbs ball. A 16lbs ball will drive harder into the pins getting better carry, but if you have a high rev rate like me then you wouldn’t really want to throw a heavy ball; instead i throw a 15lbs ball. The lightest reactive ball is only 10 pounds and that ball will hook but it wont even get you half of the carry that a heavy ball will have.

Pin Placement is a very important thing that helps your ball pretty much do any thing.

Where do you want your pin placement at?????

For Oily lanes you want the pin far away from your track. (your track is the part where the ball rolls on the lane)
In the picture below it shows for a righty where you want your pin, where the pin=p and your track=T. Now if you have a high rev rate and you want extra length on the ball get closer to your track, but make sure not to get to close to it. You would want the pin to be above the fingers or if you want length and a smooth roll on it you would want it below your fingers.

The higher the pin the sharper the reaction and the lower the smoother the reaction.

When the lane conditions become oily there are a few ways to handle it. You can move your feet and throw straight up the first arrow. If you still leave weak pins like the 5, 7,10,2-8, then this means your ball can’t handle the oil. What you do is go and sand your ball, sanding is where you make the surface of your ball more reactive to the lane. You can sand your ball yourself if you wanted to, all you need is some sand paper. The finer the paper the more your ball will hook. After sanding your ball will have more back end and a better reaction.

This is what I think are the most important things in bowling

1. Mental Game
You have to have a good mental game, what i mean is you can’t get mad or frustrated because you’re not bowling good. ALWAYS take your bowling one frame at a time. By having a good mental game you have a slight advantage over everyone else, not only will this help your game it will help you in seeing what’s happening when something goes wrong.

2. Physical shape.
You health is another key to bowling, keep your self in shape. Bowling is not a easy sport, it demands so much and when your body is a little bit tried or lazy it could lower your scores up to 50 PINS.

3. Mechanics.
You can’t bowl good without good form. Timing, push off, follow through, and a good knee bend are the keys to bowling good. If your ball is late in your swing you wont get enough lift or get too much lift on the ball. If you don’t push off at all most of the time you will leave a 10 pin because without the push off you don’t follow through. With out a knee bend you will become less consistent, because you get farther away from the lane.

4. Spares and Strikes
Spares are the most important thing in this game, without spares your strikes will be worth a lot less. Spares are the heart of the game, sure you could throw a lot of strikes but then you still would end up with like 220’s and 200’s without spares.

This post is to tell everyone that vists my website that you can email me. If you want me to go out and buy a new ball and make a video on it and give you info about it i will, but i can’t be 100% that i will have to money to do that, so if you want to make a donation to me thats fine to. If you need more information about anything i can help you, you just have to e mail me.

The first thing is to ask yourself is do i hook the ball? Do i have a high rev rate? Do i have a high ball speed?
I’ll start out with people that hook the ball with a high rev rate. When you have a high rev rate like me, the ball will read the lane much early then most. When finding your best rotation you gotta look at the lane conditions and the ball your using. If your ball is drilled for max hook, and the lanes are oily, you would want to have a 3-9 o-clock to 4-10 o-clock rotation. By having this rotation it allows your ball to get through the front put of the lane and explode on the back end for max hook. But if you have a high rev rate and your using the same ball when you hook it and the lanes are dry, you must have a more end-over-end roll like 4.5-10.5 o-clock to a 5.5-11.5 o-clock roll. By having this end-over-end roll the ball wont read the lane right away, the result of throwing the ball like this is a much straighter down-and-in shot.

For those that like to throw the ball straight, there is a good chance that you have a lower rev rate. When the lanes are oily and your having a hard time hitting the pocket you have to have more of a 5-11 o-clock roll. The reason for this is because of the lower rev rate the ball will hook more than if you had a high rev rate. Another thing is that throwing the ball like that, you create lots of carry and back end.

How to hook the ball, its not easy and it will take time to master. The first thing you should do in hooking you ball is to make sure that you have a mid-high performance ball, by having a ball like that it should make hooking the ball easier.

The first step in hooking the ball is the start with a lighter ball so you don’t hurt your arm, wrist, and elbow. Another thing to remember is that a finger tip ball helps out a lot, a finger tip ball is where you have the ball drilled so your thumb goes all the way in the ball and your fingers go in to the first knuckle. Now when your ready to bowl you should always put you fingers in first to provide a perfect fit. It doesn’t matter if you have a high or low back swing its all in the wrist and elbow. I’ll tell you about how max your hooking potential later.

When you get into you backswing and when your come down you should cup your wrist ( get under the ball) and when you get to the bottom of your swing you should release the ball on the upward part of your swing, but that’s not the only thing, also when your about the release the ball let it roll of your hand and lift up with your fingers. Now after you get that down you should see your ball hook more and more.

Step 2

After you been hooking the ball for a few week your should start to feel stronger, and when you feel that your ready to change to a heaver ball, increase your weight by 2-3 pounds. If you feel that your ball still isn’t hooking enough you should use your elbow to provide more spin. when you come into the top of your back swing start to bend your elbow. About half way through your back swing push the ball off with your elbow and lift with your fingers. ANOTHER INPORTANT THING IS when you release the ball that you have rotation that is going for the head pin.

THING TO WATCH FOR
If your ball was drilled and has too long of a span on one of your fingers YOU SHOULD NOT USE IT. This is very dangerous because you can pull tendons and even break one of your fingers. When one of your fingers has to long of a span it puts all the pressure on that one finger.
